Sharapova Ousts Henin in Upset

Someone understandably preoccupied with global markets and searching for an express-lane summary of what happened on Tuesday at the Australian Open, should take note of the following: A star was born. A star was reborn. And Serena Williams has everyone confused again.

The reborn star would be Maria Sharapova, who, of course, never left the planet’s screens, magazine covers and richest athletes lists over the past year but who has been much less of an irresistible presence on the planet’s tennis courts. Until Tuesday that is, when she played the most complete, focused and flawless big match of her career to overwhelm No. 1 seed Justine Henin 6-4, 6-0 in the quarterfinals and end the Belgian’s six-month winning streak.
