First Blood
On a day that Ferrari might prefer to forget, McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton opened his 2008 world championship challenge by grabbing pole position for the Australian Grand Prix from a super-impressive Robert Kubica in the BMW Sauber.

Camacho
Those were the days...
With the Bulls trailing 86–83 with 40 seconds remaining, coach Jackson called a timeout. When play resumed, Jordan received the inbound pass, drove to the basket, and hit a layup over several Jazz defenders. The Jazz brought the ball upcourt and passed the ball to forward Karl Malone, who was set up in the low post and was being guarded by Rodman. Malone jostled with Rodman and caught the pass, but Jordan cut behind him and swatted the ball out of his hands for a steal. Jordan then slowly dribbled upcourt and paused at the top of the key, eyeing his defender, Jazz guard Bryon Russell. With fewer than 10 seconds remaining, Jordan started to dribble right, then crossed over to his left, possibly pushing off Russell, although the officials did not call a foul. Jordan then released a shot that would be rebroadcast innumerable times in years to come. As the shot found the net, announcer Bob Costas shouted "Chicago with the lead!"

Segunda Circular

No Fear
It was, in both senses of the word, stunning. And yet Tsonga, the 22-year-old Frenchman who looks like a young Muhammad Ali but plays quite like himself, did not look stunned in the least until the moment after he calmly finished off his 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 victory with his 17th ace.

Even after watching Roger Federer play and win dozens of big matches in Grand Slam tournaments, he can still catch you off guard.
It happened on Wednesday night at the Australian Open. Federer was facing James Blake of the United States in the quarterfinals and was down 1-2 in the second-set tiebreaker. He had just played a poor defensive point, looking off rhythm and in a mood almost dark enough to match his black socks.
Up he trudged to the service line and then, out of a funk, came nothing less than tennis magic: a typically huge return from Blake that Federer parried with a forehand half-volley, a huge approach from Blake that Federer parried again as if someone had pushed a fast-forward button on a digital video recorder and then, to finish off, a whipping forehand passing shot cross-court for a winner that seemed to dip past Blake's racket at just the right moment.
With no time to think, brood or fret, it had all been done on instinct, and just like that, Federer was on his way: taking the next point, another extended crowd pleaser, with a spectacular overhead winner off a high-bouncing lob from Blake that landed very near Federer's baseline.
Blake put hand to strings and clapped, not nearly as stunned as the 16,000 fans in Rod Laver Arena. "Nothing he does surprises me," Blake said, after Federer's 7-5, 7-6 (5), 6-4 victory. "It frustrates me, but nothing surprises me.

Someone understandably preoccupied with global markets and searching for an express-lane summary of what happened on Tuesday at the Australian Open, should take note of the following: A star was born. A star was reborn. And Serena Williams has everyone confused again.
The reborn star would be Maria Sharapova, who, of course, never left the planet’s screens, magazine covers and richest athletes lists over the past year but who has been much less of an irresistible presence on the planet’s tennis courts. Until Tuesday that is, when she played the most complete, focused and flawless big match of her career to overwhelm No. 1 seed Justine Henin 6-4, 6-0 in the quarterfinals and end the Belgian’s six-month winning streak.
